About

Maria is a ceramic artist, based in Plymouth. She has studied ceramics in Greece as well as the U.K. She holds a BA Hons in Ceramics (UWE Bristol, 2001) and a PGCE in FE (University of Greenwich, 2003).

Marias work is firstly informed through her travel. This involves transforming photographs of landscapes into abstract sketches and drawings.  She then produces 3D maquettes that result in clay sculptures.

Clay is her preferred material as it lends itself to a slow method of production. Working slowly allows for the application of high quality craftsmanship.

In addition to her abstract sculptures she creates utilitarian everyday objects related to food production and consumption. She makes these because she is interested in the rituals of food sharing and how this is incorporated in people’s everyday lives around the globe.

Maria has taught ceramics and 3D Design in Further Education for seven years. Since 2010 she holds the post of the Ceramics Workshop Coordinator at the Plymouth College of Art.
